I'm Dean and I used to be a police officer for 20 years. I thought that I was already living healthy because I was already careful with what I eat and I exercise too, a lot. The last straw came when I fainted in front of my men while on a site recce. I woke up facing the sky with faces looking down on me. Nobody knew what had happened and neither did I.
I was suffering from unknown fainting spells, diagnosed with early onset arthritis, inflamed joints and slipped disc. If I sat on the floor, I needed help getting up. I was told that there was nothing I could do about the arthritis and that I needed surgery for my spine. Life seemed to be going downhill for me. Again and again, I was told this is part and parcel of aging.
Then I resigned and took charge of my health again by actively going on a learning journey. I thought I would reframe what aging and health would mean to me. I went back to school and armed myself with knowledge from published evidence-based studies on gerontology, nutrition, health and behavioural change. Even so, I felt that it wasn't enough so I undertook various health programs of different modalities, including Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, and experimented to discover what works best. I am constantly keeping myself up to date with practical knowledge that empower myself and communities around the world. Today, I support others to prevent, manage and reverse weight issues and chronic illnesses such as high cholesterol and diabetes.
